MINGLE takes into account the main principles of lifelong learning and liberal adult education, as the key to develop work related skills and competencies but also skills for personal formation in the community. Moreover, the core concept of this proposal is based on the assertion that liberal adult education has significant outcomes for the development of skills required for active citizenship and full participation in society. We assert that civil society is based on active citizenship; the latter requires strong social capital, social networks, and lifelong learning skills. Through the proposed project we aim at upgrading self-initiated participation in informal or formal adult lifelong learning activities (often seen as leisure time activity), to a valuable easy-to-access and easy-to-follow process for individuals, enhancing at the same time its benefits for society in general.

This becomes even more critical when we refer to migrants and their integration in host societies. Migrant workers form a vulnerable social group, in many ways. They cross borders to offer their labour in countries which they presume to have more opportunities for higher paid work, be it low-skilled or menial; thus they are under pressure to keep costs down and profits up. They typically endure turbulent life experiences as they provide their unlimited labour in contexts which afford them scant protection. Being at the interstices of their home state and host state, they are ineligible for official education and training opportunities that are available for contemporary workers. Nonetheless, they search for those opportunities, even creating their own, sometimes depending on the support of local civic action groups.

The lifelong learning paradigm is required to include such transnational learners in order to sustain and enhance their capabilities as contemporary workers and residents in the host societies. Basic knowledge about the new environment they live in enables these learners to develop skills and abilities necessary to integrate and progress. The project will introduce learners to key-aspects of the cultural and social life of the host country; in this way, participants will gain a broad knowledge base from which to interpret the world around.

Benefits for participants will be both direct and indirect:

  • "learning the host language allows communication, understanding of documents and other work-related benefits;
  • "knowledge of civic/legal and also practical every-day-life's issues secures migrants' position in the host society and allows for their awareness of rules, norms and ethics; thus, enables them to develop social networks, self-confidence and other skills necessary for survival.
